Implementing RDS “Common Language” in Teamcenter

DNV, Intelizign and Siemens Gamesa are running a use case focused on implementing IEC/ISO 81346 Reference Designation Structure (RDS) as a “common language” inside a Teamcenter environment. The purpose is to surface practical questions, constraints and blockers—and have Intelizign clarify solution approaches—so that RDS can be applied consistently across product structures, configurations, documents and downstream processes.

What we are piloting

  • Apply RDS principles to Teamcenter-managed structures (items/BOMs, documents and related metadata) to enable consistent identification and navigation.
  • Formulate and validate a set of implementation questions (data model, configuration, integration and governance) and collect Intelizign’s recommended answers.
  • Identify blockers and required enablers for scaling from a proof-of-concept to operational usage (roles, workflows, quality controls and change management).
  • Define what “good” looks like for RDS in PLM: traceability across lifecycle phases, interoperability and export/hand-over readiness.

Why it matters for RDS4X

  • PLM is where “common language” either becomes real or remains theoretical—this use case shows how RDS can be embedded into a core enterprise system.
  • Creates reusable guidance for other organizations implementing RDS in Teamcenter-like environments (data model patterns, governance and rollout approach).
  • Helps de-risk RDS adoption by identifying blockers early (tool constraints, integration gaps, master data quality and process alignment).
  • Supports interoperability and lifecycle continuity by aligning designations, structures and configuration concepts to standard-based RDS

Use case outline

The team compiles a focused set of “questions to be answered” about implementing RDS in Teamcenter—covering how RDS aspects map to PLM objects, how designations are governed, how changes are handled, and how information is exchanged with downstream tools. Intelizign provides recommended solution patterns and clarifies constraints, which are then validated against a Siemens Gamesa context and summarized as actionable guidance.

Timeline & status

The use case is progressed through joint working sessions and is focused on documenting implementation answers and blockers that can be reused in follow-on deployments. Status will be given at the upcoming Toulouse gathering dated 28th of May 2026

Partners

Siemens Gamesa contributes the operational Teamcenter context and target processes, Intelizign contributes Teamcenter implementation expertise, and DNV contributes RDS/RDS4X experience and cross-industry reference model perspectives.

Expected outcomes

  • A structured “Q&A” list capturing key questions and Intelizign’s recommended answers for implementing RDS in Teamcenter.
  • A prioritized list of blockers and required enablers (tooling, integration, governance and data quality) to make RDS operational in PLM.
  • A reusable implementation pattern that other RDS4X members can adapt to similar PLM environments.
  • Recommendations for next-step pilots (e.g., export/hand-over scenarios, integration to downstream engineering tools, and validation in additional projects).
